The Road to Auschwitz Leads Through Knowledge, Power and Detachment David Stannard and Elie Wiesel are probably right. The road to Auschwitz lies through Christendom as well as science, I would add, and then through North and South America. Himmler wanted to be detached from the horrors that he perpetuated. He wanted to be impersonal and uninvolved like god or the scientist, or like the mythical creators of the world's religions, arts and knowledges. He wanted to abstract himself from his actions; divorce conscience from knowledge, and pursue the purity of science and art and thereby refine humanity towards a greater purpose. He was detached, like Newton, Columbus, Innocent or Einstein were detached. |
